The Great Lakes are connected to the World by important waterways; the Welland Canal, Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Seaway and Chicago Area Waterway System.

The Saint Marys River, Saint Clair River, Lake Saint Clair, and Detroit River, also provide vital pathways between the Great Lakes for commercial vessel traffic.
