This page provides an overview of travel information for the Great Lakes region. Defining the region are the five Great Lakes of North America: Superior Huron, Michigan, Erie, and Ontario. Also important are waterways that connect the lakes to other areas.
The Great Lakes are bordered by eight U.S. states (Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York), and the Canadian Province of Ontario.
Within minutes of almost every city and town in the region are numerous recreational experiences. Activities such as fishing, hunting, birding, wildlife watching, boating, hiking, skiing, and others can be found throughout the region.
Surrounding the lakes are hundreds of national, state, and provincial parks, city and county parks, wildlife refuges, national forests lakeshores, historic sites, lighthouses, and other public lands.
